Master’s Studentships in Translation and Interpreting at Swansea University, UK

College of Arts and Humanities invites Applications for two AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s Studentships in Translation and Interpreting for UK/EU students at Swansea University, UK 2012

Study Subject(s): Translation and Interpreting
Course Level: Master’s
Scholarship Provider: AHRC
Scholarship can be taken at: UK

Applicants must meet AHRC residency criteria – for a full award, applicants must: • have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period preceding the date of application for an award, and • have settled status in the UK within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971 (i.e. not be subject to any restriction on the period for which he/she may stay) Students from EU countries other than the UK may be eligible for a fees-only award, if ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU.

College of Arts and Humanities invites applications for two AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s studentships in Translation and Interpreting. This programme, new in 2011, is a variant of the MA Translation with Language Technology in which an emphasis on Public Service Interpreting (with an introduction to Conference Interpreting) replaces that on Language Technology (which, however, remains an option). It is designed to provide students with a qualification that validates a wide range of professional skills and allows them to respond flexibly to the changing challenges of the language services market. Students take practical modules on interpreting in local authority and healthcare settings. These are designed to enable students to pass the examinations of the widely recognised Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, which is offered by the professional body the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

Vicky (as she was widely referred to) had obtained a first class Warwick MEng in 2003 and continued onto our research degree programme, examining aspects of cementitious materials and their application to low-cost housing in the tropics. Throughout her studies she was ill with an infection that often incapacitated her, yet after every medical setback she returned to her studies with renewed determination. Her commitment to completing those studies was exceptional and extraordinary and she consciously risked her life for them. This Scholarship has been established in recognition and memory of her commitment, dedication and courage. She set an example for us all.
